There is no right or wrong period of time to mourn your mother’s departure. Years after your loss, these emotions may occasionally come flooding back.
At any age, losing your mother may be a devastating event. You might have experienced a sudden loss or seen a long-term decline in health.
You might experience intense grief at first, followed by occasional periods of sadness as time passes. Occasionally, weeks or years after a parent passes away, the impact of that loss can still be felt in daily life.
Regardless of the type of relationship you had with your mother, losing her can be extremely difficult. Support is available. Many others, just like you, have loss-related stories to share.
Losing your mom is painful. It can be challenging to think about anything other than your mother’s passing at the time. Grief has immediate signs and can progress in phases.

More than only medical issues can result from losing your mother. You might think that you’ve lost a crucial piece of your support network. You might also notice that your family’s relationships have become strained. You may feel far from siblings and other parental figures. They could need their own space to mourn or they might not be as emotionally accessible as your mother once was. Everyone experiences grief differently after losing a mother. You might need the assistance of a mental health professional if your grief interferes with your ability to function on a daily basis or lasts for more than a year. I believe it is the hardest thing I have ever experienced in my life. For me it is helpful to talk with my adult children about my feelings and to keep certain things around my house that remind me of her and of course prayer!
