There are varying reasons why people go on trips with their pets. It could be out of necessity or simply because they’re very attached to their pets and enjoy their company. Regardless of whatever it is, traveling with pets requires some earlier preparation to have a smooth and stress-free journey for both you and the pet. You have to make arrangements for their needs before embarking on the trip, especially if it’s a lengthy trip, as you can’t assume you’ll get all you need along the way.
Here are 6 ways to prepare for a car trip with your pet.
1. Be Car Ready
Before going on the trip, ensure your car is in a ready state for your pet. Switch the car seat and floor rugs for ones with covers that will protect the car’s upholstery while keeping your pet comfortable.
2. Go with Enough Water
Water is essential, especially on long trips. Go with enough water for both you and your pet to prevent dehydration or to get water from unfamiliar sources.
3. Attach an Identification to Your Pet
Going into another location, you have to make sure your pet has a means of identification if they get lost and are found somewhere. You could attach a collar containing details of your name, address, and contact number. Make sure the collar is comfortable, and they are not at risk of being choked. Better still, you could get a microchip in your pet. Kindly check in with your vet to have it installed.
4. Get a Pet Carrier
When going on trips, it is essential to keep your pet restrained. While the vehicle is in motion, your pet could get restless, which might be very distracting for you, especially if you’re the only one in the car. An easy, comfortable way to manage that is to strap them in a pet carrier. Make sure the carrier is wide enough to accommodate your pet adequately.
5. Have a Pet Travel Kit Ready
A pet travel kit should include supplies of food, water, medications and vitamins, feeding bowls, waste bags, toiletries, and any other thing you deem necessary. It is also essential to include a pet’s first aid kit in the eventuality of any injury or sprain. Don’t forget to take along some of your pet’s favorite toys.
6. Do Not Leave the Windows Down
Leaving your windows down will encourage your pets to stick their necks out of the vehicle. This might be cute and might excite them, but it also potentially puts them at risk of getting thrown out in the case of an accident, sudden slam on the brake, or unexpected turn. Also, make sure the car doors are locked once the car is in motion. Needless to say, never leave your pets alone in a parked car with all the windows up as they could get a heat stroke.
