Medical equipment exists in a wide range and can be classified based on its functionality, among other things. Surgical medical equipment generally includes tools, instruments, and devices specialized in performing specific actions and producing specific effects during surgery, sometimes called an operation.

There is some medical equipment used for certain surgeries, but some common ones are generally used in almost all situations. Here are some common ones and their uses:

Surgical Table

This is also known as the operating table. It is where a patient lies when an operation is being carried out on them. It puts the patient in an appropriate position for the process. This is an essential and general instrument found in an operating room.

Instrument Table

This is always found in a typical operating room. It is where surgical tools are arranged for easy access during surgery. It is also used to transport surgical instruments in and out of the operating room.

Scalpels

They are small instruments with sharp blades used in surgery. They are used for the dissection of tissues. Scalpels are also used to cut into the skin to carry out other operations. It comes in different types, shapes, and sizes for specific functions.

Scissors

Surgical scissors are made from steel and specifically for surgery, setting them apart from the ordinary type. They are used to cut sutures, dressing materials, and sometimes biological tissues.

Forceps

Forceps are used for several things during an operation. There are diverse forms of forceps that can be used for grasping, tweezing, retracting, and applying pressure, among their other uses.

Curette

This is a metal surgical instrument used for scraping and debriding dead, damaged or infected tissues in surgical procedures. They are commonly used in procedures such as dilation and curettage, and treatment of tumors.

Surgical needle, Suture, and Needle Holder

The surgical needle, surgical suture, and surgical needle holder are used hand in hand to stitch body tissues together after an operation has been carried out.

The needle is used to penetrate the skin, and it is also where the suture is attached. The surgical needle holder is used to grasp the suturing needle.

Retractors

Surgical retractors are used to keep incisions open and keep tissues and organs in place during an operation. Creating better visibility, access to underlying organs, and better surgical space is necessary.

Clamps

Clamps are used during surgical procedures as hemostats. They prevent bleeding temporarily by compressing blood vessels to stop blood flow. There are different types of clamps.

Suction Tube

These are popularly known for their usefulness in operations of the nose, throat, and ears. They are attached with suction pumps to extract secretions from these body parts.

Surgical hook

This is an instrument usually found in the surgery room. It examines, retract, and manages tissues, nerves, vessels, skin, and bones. It also has a wide variety based on its function.
